Who'd have thunk it - me a fine - art photographer

The Introduction you expect

I’m a fine-art photographer originally from Liverpool, now deeply rooted in the rugged landscapes of South Wales. My work is driven by a profound appreciation for the natural world, capturing the dramatic interplay of light, shadow, and atmosphere in a way that refuses to take a single detail for granted. That’s what people expect me to say. I think it is pretentious and a load of bullshit. So let’s cut through it.

This is the introduction: you’re getting to the point, no bull.

My mates from childhood would be pissing themselves laughing at the thought of me being a fine-art photographer, and to be honest, I can’t blame them. But it’s true, I am from Liverpool, and I guess I am deeply rooted in Wales, having spent nearly 40 years here. Yes, I am a photographer, and I do produce fine-art photographs. Looking for the light and shadow, and the texture, is instinctive. The landscape, or whatever I am photographing, whether that be people or animals, is the star of the show. The rest of the gumph below is spot on.

My connection to the outdoors began in my childhood, spent in quiet patience on canal banks, rivers, and remote lakes while fishing. That early appreciation for stillness evolved into a lifelong journey in photography that began in school back in 1973, when a teacher persuaded me to join the camera club. Decades of capturing the world culminated in refining my technical craft later in life, graduating from Cardiff Metropolitan University with a BA (Hons) in Photography in 2022. I am also proud to be an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society (ARPS).

Living in South Wales places me at the gateway to some of the most dramatic coastlines and wilderness in the UK, with easy access to Bristol and the West Country. My work is defined by a desire to reveal both the thunderous fury and the mirror-like stillness of nature, capturing the profound, raw beauty of the world that so many pass by.

Still don’t believe I’m a fine-art photographer? Have a squint at these.

A few more things about me

I am straight-talking and to the point; people may call it ‘blunt’.

I have a warped sense of humour and find something to laugh at in anything. Yeah, I’m the guy who laughs at funerals and other inappropriate times.

I have a neurological condition that affects me in numerous ways. I forget things. I have no control over what comes out of my mouth; if it pops into my head, it has to come out. I’m just as surprised as anyone else by some of the things

I say. I do and will fall over at some point; I wish I could say I’ve had too much to drink, but it won’t be caused by drink. Thank the bugger who wired my brain up; they did a shit job.

In the event that I do fall over, feel free to laugh; the loudest laugh you hear will be me, preceded by ‘Oh shit!’ If you want to give marks for technical content and artistic interpretation, feel free to do so.

While I do listen to advice, I don’t listen to advice I haven’t asked for. If you are a photographer with more than 53 years of experience and have spent a lifetime learning your craft, as I have. I’ll welcome your advice if I ask for it.
