Signing the register makes it all official; you are  now Mr & Mrs, Mr & Mr, or Mrs & Mrs. This is officially the start of your lives together; in front of all your nearest and dearest, you promised to be there until the day comes when one of you isn't anymore. To the sounds of cheers and certainly a few tears, that's the official part of it over.
