speeches, love them or hate them
some are poignant, others funny, all of them essential
The newlyweds face the world for the first time.
The wedding breakfast is over; everyone has stuffed their face (thank you, the food was lovely and much appreciated), alcohol is flowing, and things are starting to loosen up. So what better time than now to have the speeches? I know everyone fears the speeches; what is the best man going to say about the groom, who’s sat there squirming in his seat, oblivious to what is going to be said. Oh, now that wasn’t bad, was it? The best man was kind and gentle when he had so much dirt on the groom that he could have leant on; that’s a true friend.
Up next is Dad, if he can just get out of that chair, ooh look at that wobble. Now, speaking as a dad myself, it is our responsibility to embarrass our kids; it’s an unwritten rule. Give him this time of his moment in the limelight; after all, he’s spent your inheritance on the wedding. See how much he loves you, and how proud he is of you and how happy he is that you are no longer his responsibility.
Your other half has had some lovely things to say about your mum; that’ll change, it usually does. Everyone knows my mother-in-law; she’s on the flag. Oh, oh, look out, Uncle Dave’s heading for the microphone; somebody best cut him off with a pint.
